Are We Keeping Up With the Rest of the World

Another indication that we may be falling behind the rest of the world in terms of education came from the latest results from the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).

The article is from the WSJ and it reinforces concerns that I've had for years.   We simply cannot ignore the fact that as a country we are just not doing a good enough job of educating our children.  We can't cut resources which help in developing the future of our country.

A brief summary of the results:
The results from the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which are being released on Tuesday, show that teenagers in the U.S. slipped from 25th to 31st in math since 2009; from 20th to 24th in science; and from 11th to 21st in reading, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which gathers and analyzes the data in the U.S.

As far as I'm concerned we need the following:

  • More resources and funds.
  • More teachers, smaller class sizes.
  • Hold teachers accountable.  Eliminate tenure and review them on a yearly basis.
  • Hold parents accountable.  Schools are not baby sitting services.
  • Hold students accountable.  Teach them that there are consequences for poor study habits.  Fail a test then you get an F.  Don't be afraid to hold them back if they don't understand the curriculum.
  • Stop teaching to tests.  Make sure that students grasp concepts and can apply them to real life.
